The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and its usefulness for municipalities in Girona
The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is an indicator that provides an approximation of the presence or absence of green spaces. It measures how green a certain area is by providing information on the state and quantity of vegetation present and its evolution over time.
Its values range from 0 to 1, where 1 is the optimal value.
Negative values are associated with areas of water and snow.
Positive values close to 0 represent rocky areas that may have minimal vegetation presence until they reach values close to 0.3.
From 0.3 we find the presence of vegetation. The higher the value, the more lush the vegetation will be until it reaches values close to 1.
Consult the technical sheet for more information.
With the NDVI, municipalities can know the average quantity and quality of vegetation they have. This information is a starting point that allows them to:
Plan the creation of new green spaces and/or improve the management of existing ones, to promote a healthier and more sustainable territorial development of municipality.
Analyze and reduce inequalities in access to existing green spaces.
